Relocating the Internet Explorer Favorites Folder

The purpose of this article is to provide the computer user with a methodology to relocate the internet explorer browser favorites/links to a spare drive.

Why

Problem: If the operating system requires re-installation or the partition is re-formatted, then the internet links will be forfeited.

Solution: Move the favorites folder to a spare partition.

How to in XP

Step 1: Create a new folder on the spare drive

  • Open explorer and create a new folder on the spare drive and call it something like My Favorites. 
  • Next go to C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Favorites
  • Right-click and highlight Favorites and select copy
  • Next right-click on the new folder, e.g. E:\My Favorites and paste.
  • Note:  The example E:\My Favorites indicates that the drive letter to the spare drive E.  However, your spare drive letter may be different

 

Step 2: Modify the registry with the new location

  • First make a system restore point as a precaution and to undue accidental changes to the registry.
  • Next open the registry editor, e.g., Click on Start > Run > RegEdit
  • In the left hand pane of the editor click on My Computer
  • Next drill down the registry branches to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

  • In the right pane double click Favorites to edit the key value
  • Enter the path/location to the new folder for your Favorites on the spare drive.  For example, E:\My Favorites
    • Note:  The example E:\My Favorites indicates that the drive letter to the spare drive E.  However, your spare drive letter and the folder name you chose may be different.  Therefore, enter it into the value field. The path  must be exact.
  • Click Ok, close the editor and reboot for the changes to take affect.

How to in Vista or Win7

 –

Step 1:

  • Open Explorer, create new folder on spare drive.  For example: MyFavorites

  

Step 2:

  • Right-click on Favorites on the C Drive 
    • In Vista look under the User Account, i.e. top level folder in right pane. 
    • In W7 – Click on C Disk > Users > User Account
  • Click Location Tab
  • Click Move Button and
  • Point to the new folder on the spare drive, e.g. E:\MyFavorites
  • In the example, E is the spare drive but your actual spare drive may be a different letter.

Note 1:  If there are multiple users on your xp, you will need to log into each user and repeat the steps above.  However, create seperate folders on the spare drive for each user. 

For example, if Bob, Billy and Mary have user accounts and you have more than one spare drive, then create folders like:  E:\MyFavorites4Bob, F:\MyFavorites5Billy and G:\MyFavorites4Mary

Note 2:  Remember if you execute a system restore point or reinstall xp on the C disk, the registry will reset to the default locations and you will have to repeat Step 2.
