Updating the Registry

The purpose of this article is to provide the computer user the method to update the registry with the location to the personal folders to the spare drive.

Before you begin:  The steps below utilize the path E:\MyFiles.  However, if you had chosen a different naming convention, then  you will need to utilize the exact path and folder names on your spare drive for the settings below.

Personal Folders Registry Keys

Firstly

  • Open the registry
  • Drill down to:  HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ User Shell Folders

Next

  • Double-click Personal and replace value with E:\My Files\My Documents
  • Then click OK
  • Double-click My Pictures and replace value with E:\My Files\My Pictures
  •  Then click OK
  •  Then click OK and Close registry editor.

Lastly

  • Log off and back in or Reboot for the changes to take effect in the registry.
  • Proceed to the instructions below for the My Music Folder

 My Music Registry Key

Before you begin:  The steps below describe creating the My Music key if it does not exist or modifying it if the My Music Key exists in both locations. 

 

Firstly

  • Open the registry
  • Drill down to location 1:  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer\ User Shell Folders \ My Music

And if My Music does not exist, then create it as follows:

  • Right-click on User Shell Folders, select NewExpandable String Value, enter My Music then press the return key
  • Double click on My Music and enter value: E:\My Files\My Music
  • Then click OK and close the registry editor
  • Log off and back in or reboot for changes to take effect.

Or if My Music does exist, then modify it as follows: 

  • Double click on My Music and enter value: E:\My Files\My Music
  • Then click OK and close the reg

Next

  • Drill down to location 2:  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Shell Folders
  • Double-click My Music and enter value E:\My Files\My Music
  • Then click OK and close registry

Lastly

  • Re-login or Reboot for changes to take effect in registry.
  • ,Make a system restore point and call it something like: Updated Registry with My Spare Drive Paths
